Mount Rainier National Park Chain Requirement:  All vehicles are required to carry tire chains when traveling in the park during the winter season (Nov 1 - May 1).

Car

From Seattle (about 87 miles away) or Tacoma (about 65 miles away), take Hwy 5 south to Hwy 512 east. Exit onto Hwy 7 (Pacific Avenue). Follow Hwy 7 south to Elbe and continue on Hwy 706 east to the Nisqually Entrance.

From Portland, Oregon (about 136 miles away), take I-5 north to U.S. 12 east to Morton; then take Hwy. 7 north and turn east on Hwy. 706 at Elbe, continuing to the Nisqually Entrance .

East entrance: From Yakima take Highway 12 west to SR 123. Follow SR 123 north to the Stevens Canyon Entrance of Mount Rainier National Park. Stevens Canyon Road will close September 6, 2011 and remain closed through the winter. Access to the Paradise Inn and National Park Inn is limited to the southwest (Nisqually) entrance. See directions from Seattle and Portland.

Northeast entrance: From Seattle/Tacoma, take Hwy. 410 south; from Yakima, take Hwy. 410 north, to White River Entrance. Northwest entrance: Take Hwy. 165 south to Carbon River Entrance.

In the winter, all park roads are closed except the stretch between Nisqually and Paradise and the road from the park boundary to Ohanaopecosh ranger station.

The National Park Inn at Longmire is located 6 miles inside the Nisqually Entrance and the Paradise Inn is located 19 miles inside the entrance.

The closest major airports are Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (65 miles away) and Portland International Airport (150 miles away).

Bus
